Therapy dog Merlin bringing comfort to young patients at Broomfield Hospital

Young patients at Broomfield Hospital are being supported by a very special visitor — Merlin, a gentle Golden Retriever therapy dog whose calm presence is helping to ease anxiety for children attending for procedures.

Alongside his handler Mandy, Merlin regularly visits the hospital to provide reassurance and comfort to young patients and their families at what can often be a worrying time. His friendly nature and relaxed temperament help create a calmer environment, offering moments of distraction and connection within a busy clinical setting.

Merlin has also featured in a dedicated hospital video designed to help prepare children for paediatric anaesthesia, showing how therapy dogs can play a positive role in reducing anxiety before treatment. By helping children feel more at ease, Merlin supports both patients and healthcare staff in creating a more reassuring experience.

Mandy said:
“Watching Merlin work with children in the hospital is incredibly rewarding. His gentle nature helps them relax and smile at a time when they may be feeling nervous or unsure. It’s a privilege to be able to visit and support them.”

Visits like these demonstrate the powerful impact therapy dogs can have in healthcare environments. A few quiet minutes with a calm, friendly dog can transform how a child feels about their hospital experience and provide comfort to families and staff alike.

Essex Therapy Dogs is proud of Merlin, Mandy and all of its volunteer teams who continue to bring comfort and connection to people across hospitals and healthcare settings throughout Essex.
